BEAUTIFUL Jul 21, 2010 Throughout my life, I have turned to "early" religious music for a totally relaxing and soothing to my life musical experience. This recording of 16th century liturgical music written for the last Monastic hours of the day (Compline) by the well known English Renaissance composers Tallis, Sheppard and Byrd, certainly has provided for me a totally relaxing and soothing musical experience. It really is a beautiful album of plainsong, antiphons and hymns set wonderfully by the aforesaid composers and performed most beautifully by the British group Stile Antico. I really derived much pleasure from this album which is recorded wonderfully by Harmonia Mundi.
Instant Relaxation Jun 11, 2010 This type of music resonates with me very much for some reason. I have no other music like it...I happened to here this music on NPR News after work on a 30min drive, and it helped me release all tension built from the day. After I have listened to it, I still here the angelic voices still signing. This is not Gregorian chant, I believe it's 16th century "church" music in latin. Yet still sounds amazing.

HEAVENLY CHORAL AMBIANCE Jan 01, 2010 MUSIC FOR COMPLINE, performed by the British vocal ensemble Stile Antico, is, in a word, BREATHTAKING. Seamless, subtle, mystical 16th and 17th century polyphony by Thomas Tallis, William Byrd, John Sheppard, Robert White and Hugh Aston, Compline is the last of the daily monastic hours - "a form of night prayer." There is a quality of unabated spirituality running throughout this album. That soothes, centers, uplifts and opens a portal into - the very center of my being. And, somehow, in a manner better felt than verbally articulated - this c.d. evokes SILENCE at the very heart of it. That acts as an invitation to the listener to become one with the silence at the very center of our existence. It cannot be recommended highly enough.

Luscious! Jul 04, 2009 This is a must-have cd for anyone who enjoys music from the Renaissance period. The pieces are flawlessly performed by a terrific ensemble.
The chromaticism of some of the selections foreshadows the 20th century, while most of the music is pure choral sweetness. The harmonic rhythm is always interesting and often unpredictable.
The singers perform with liquid tones and impeccable intonation. The balance of the harmonic and textural lines is just right. These pieces are wonderfully satisfying.
Highly recommended!

Music for Compline Jan 08, 2009 The young performers on this beautiful CD sing with incredible clarity, precision, and an obvious love for this music. This is NOT a CD to listen to while bustling about, but one to have when quiet contemplation and restoration of the soul is needed.
